What is the weather like in Costa Rica, and when is the best time to travel to avoid rain?
The dry season from December to April is the best time to avoid rain in Costa Rica. The Pacific coast and the Central Plateau are drier and warmer than the Caribbean coast and the southern Pacific region. The rainy season from May to November brings more rainfall but also more lush greenery. Costa Rica’s Caribbean coast is a unique area with rich culture, nature, and cuisine. The weather there is hot and humid year-round, with temperatures around 27°C. The Caribbean coast experiences an equatorial climate with abundant rainfall and high humidity. However, there are some drier periods, particularly in September and October, when this part of the country receives the least rain.
The rainy season in Costa Rica, often called the “green season”, lasts from May to November. However, this does not mean it will rain nonstop—there’s actually a chance it might not rain at all! Generally, the rainy season is characterised by sunny mornings followed by afternoon showers lasting one to two hours. The rain brings out the lush greenery and freshness of nature, making it a great time to explore the country’s biodiversity and beauty. Costa Rica also has many microclimates, which can provide sunshine even in the rainiest month. For example, the Caribbean coast is usually sunny and dry in September and October, while the rest of the country experiences more rain. At what time of year and in where can you see turtles?
Depending on the beach you visit, you can observe different species of sea turtles in Costa Rica throughout the year. The most common turtle is the Olive Ridley, which nests along the Pacific coast, mainly at Ostional Beach, between July and February. The endangered hawksbill turtle nests from May to November on the Caribbean coast, particularly in Tortuguero National Park. The green turtle, recognised by its olive colour and smooth shell, nests between June and October on the Caribbean coast, also in Tortuguero National Park. The largest and most spectacular turtle is the leatherback, which can exceed 2 metres in length and weigh over 600 kg. It nests between November and March on the Pacific coast, on beaches such as Playa Grande, Naranjo, and Langosta.

Costa Rica is one of the best places in the world to observe humpback whales, as they migrate from both the Northern and Southern Hemispheres to the warm tropical waters of the Pacific coast.
If you visit Costa Rica between December and March, you have a good chance of spotting humpback whales in the Gulf of Papagayo in the northern province of Guanacaste. This is also the dry season, so you can enjoy sunny days and clear skies.
If you visit Costa Rica between July and October, you can spot humpback whales along the southern Pacific coast, particularly in Uvita, Drake Bay, and Golfito. This is the peak season for the Antarctic migration, when whale numbers are highest and sightings are most likely. You can also observe other marine mammals, such as dolphins, orcas, and pilot whales.

What forms of payment are commonly used in Costa Rica, and what should you keep in mind when handling money?
The official currency of Costa Rica is the Colón (CRC). In tourist areas, US dollars (USD) are often accepted, but usually only bills up to 20 USD are accepted, and change is typically given in Colones. For this reason, it is recommended to pay directly in Colones whenever possible to avoid unfavourable exchange rates or losing out on change.
The best places to exchange money are banks in the cities—currency exchange offices at airports generally charge much higher fees. Common credit cards (especially Visa and Mastercard) are widely accepted in hotels, restaurants, and shops across the country. However, in more remote areas or with smaller vendors, cash may be required. ATMs are available in most cities and tourist regions.
Please note that some banks automatically restrict the use of credit or debit cards abroad. Make sure to check before your trip whether your card needs to be activated for use in Costa Rica.
